To start our second year at university we received an email shortly before returning, containing a brief:
“as a warm up please prepare a digital presentation lasting no longer than 3 minutes using the starting point I AM HERE. As with all briefs on Stage 2 you must take an individual approach and so we will expect a wide range of creative outcomes to match your own diverse interests. Developing a strong concept is key, for instance you could take the brief into geographical, political, social, environmental, evolutionary, technological, or personal realms.
Use the brief to show off your strengths as a creative communicator – consider how you can generate narrative through creative sequences using text, image, sound, spoken word, or gesture. You can work in any format – film, animation, motion graphics, photography, typography, performance or anything else you can think of. We will be looking at the presentations on Thursday 4th October.”
I spent a long time panicking and having no idea what to do, before frantically throwing this together in two evenings:
The idea was to show the last 8 years leading up to where I am now. I’m not very happy with it at all, but I’m glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone – I hate trying to do shit like this. If I had given myself more time to make it, I’m sure that I could have put together something that I quite liked.
